Radio: Greek government evicts media workers occupying headquarters of national broadcaster


The government dismissed the 2,600 workers at the ERT public broadcaster in June. Since then, hundreds of the technicians and journalists have been occupying the stations around the country and continuing public broadcasts for the past five months.

Thousands rally to support public broadcaster

Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the shut-down ERT public broadcast centre this evening after riot police raided the building in the early hours.

The centre in a northern suburb of Athens had been occupied by media workers since the government closed it down in June, and they continued to broadcast programmes round the clock.

At approximately 4:20am Thursday morning, hundreds of Greek riot police forces, along with a public prosecutor, raided the headquarters of ERT, Greece’s national television and radio broadcast station, demanding that employees immediately vacate the premises.

In Protest of Austerity Measures; Greek Public Service Workers Strike

To the casual observer, it might have seemed like any ordinary day; perhaps there had been an accident or the police, dozens of police, had merely blocked the streets. Then, there was the sight of dozens of protestors at the crest of Athen’s Syntagma Square, shouting pro-labor slogans in Greek and sending a message to the government that was nothing if not loud and clear.
