Thousands rally to support public broadcaster

Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the shut-down ERT public broadcast centre this evening after riot police raided the building in the early hours.

The centre in a northern suburb of Athens had been occupied by media workers since the government closed it down in June, and they continued to broadcast programmes round the clock.

The union-supported rally started at 4pm and was expected to last into the night.

Teresa Marshall, PSI’s communications director, addressed the crowd and brought a message of international solidarity.

As the protesters gathered Syriza MPs put forward a motion of no confidence in the Greek government that will go to a parliamentary vote.

Listen to videographer Aris Chatzistefanou describe what he saw when he arrived shortly after the police raid.
